A walking tour through the extraordinary world of Bavarian Baroque and Rococo, told through the city's most remarkable interiors — the spectacular Asam Church, the Italian influence behind the Theatine Church, and the ceremonial world of the Wittelsbach court around the Residence and Cuvilliés Theatre. Rather than moving from monument to monument, the tour tells the story behind the spaces: how architecture was used to create emotion, devotion and power.

Nymphenburg & Schleißheim

Two royal residences, two very different expressions of power. Nymphenburg began as an elegant summer residence surrounded by gardens and intimate park pavilions; Schleißheim grew into one of Bavaria's grandest Baroque ensembles, conceived on an altogether more monumental scale — linked to Nymphenburg by a historic canal system that binds both into one designed landscape. Together they reveal how the Wittelsbach dynasty used architecture, gardens and ceremony to express status, ambition and political power.

Depending on the route it can take in Munich's old town, a historic café, a relaxed lunch in a traditional restaurant, and — when the weather is fine — a beer garden along the way. This is not a conventional food tour — it is a cultural journey with time to enjoy the places along the way.

Monasteries, pilgrimage & beer culture
Half or full day Excursion Countryside

Some of Bavaria's most impressive Baroque architecture is found far beyond the city centre. This excursion combines monasteries and pilgrimage churches with the centuries-old connection between monastic life and Bavarian beer culture — the monumental monastery church of Fürstenfeld, the pilgrimage hill of Andechs, or other remarkable religious sites in the countryside, with time for a monastery inn or beer garden along the way. Architecture comes first. The beer simply makes the journey even more Bavarian.

Day one

Munich — the Baroque city

Late morning
Arrival and check-in, then a guided walk through the Asam Church, Bürgersaal and Holy Spirit churches.
Lunch
Viktualienmarkt or the Alter Hof.
Afternoon
Theatine Church, then the Residence with the Antiquarium and a reserved slot in the Cuvilliés Theatre.
Evening
Dinner in the old town, the rest of the evening free.

Day two

Palaces & pilgrimage

Morning
Nymphenburg Palace and park, with the Amalienburg — Cuvilliés' Rococo at its finest — as the high point.
Lunch
Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige in the palace grounds.
Afternoon
South to the Wieskirche, UNESCO World Heritage and the summit of European Rococo, then on to Lake Chiemsee and the boat to Fraueninsel.
Evening
Dinner at the convent inn and a walk around the island at dusk.

Day three

Cloister landscape

Morning
Boat back to the mainland and on to the newly restored Kloster Beuerberg — a Baroque monastery ensemble open to visitors again and still largely undiscovered.
Lunch
Near the monastery or in Bad Tölz.
Afternoon
Back towards Munich with a stop at Schäftlarn or Fürstenfeld, depending on the route.
Close
Arrival in Munich, a last coffee in the Palmenhaus at Nymphenburg.
Why this route

The journey builds: city, then countryside, then island — each day with its own motive. The Wieskirche is the visual summit, the night on Fraueninsel turns sightseeing into experience, and Beuerberg is the kind of place that does not appear on a standard Bavarian itinerary. Every day can also be booked on its own as a day tour.

Admission fees, transport and audio-guide sets are listed separately in the quote. Reduced rates apply for schools, university groups and non-profit associations.

Architecture from an architect's perspective

Baroque Bavaria is led by a Munich-based architect and passionate admirer of Bavarian Baroque. The tours are made for visitors who want more than dates and names.

Why does a Baroque church feel so dramatic? How does architecture guide your eye? Why does one palace feel intimate while another feels monumental? And why did Bavaria become home to some of Europe's most extraordinary Baroque interiors?

The aim is not an academic lecture, but to make architecture visible, understandable and memorable. No previous knowledge of architecture or art history is required. Tours are available in English and German.

Frequently asked

Are admission fees included? No. Entrance to the Residence, Nymphenburg or Schleißheim is charged separately; I make the reservations for you.
Are meals and hotels included on the Grand Tour? Guiding and transfers are included; accommodation is booked separately or through a travel partner. On the culinary day tours, café and beer-garden stops are part of the route but paid on the spot.
How large can a group be? Up to 25 guests; in church interiors I recommend no more than 20. Larger groups are split with colleagues.
Do tours run in the rain? Yes. The Munich route is largely indoors; on the palace tours we simply shorten the time in the gardens.
Is it accessible? Largely, with limitations at Freising cathedral hill and Andechs. Please note it in your enquiry and the route will be adapted.
How do I cancel? Free of charge up to 72 hours before the start; after that 50 % of the guiding fee applies.
